Importance of Voting in Politics

Politics has always been a powerful issue. Generally, the term politics means the process where a governing set of people make the necessary decisions for a certain bigger group or community.  In fact, politics has been observed in most human group communications.

Generally, people associated with politics are associated with power as well. The quest and process of attaining the power associated with politics is undoubtedly a very complex and challenging step.

There are several political systems that a government can make use of, and exercise. The governing powers are distributed or could be not accordingly depending on the respective political system that the government is exercising. A written constitution is always formulated to define formally the division of power of a certain political system. In a democratic government for example, the people are allowed to vote for the politicians that they want to lead in making the decisions of their institution. Voting for this kind of political system is a universal right. Casting of ballots is a right of the adult citizens of a democratic rule.  They are allowed to vote in local and national elections. Thus, by so doing exercises a certain amount of influence in this complex process of politics. This essential element of democracy is known as suffrage. And exercising this right, which is formally granted to a citizen by the formulated constitution, is both an obligation and a privilege in a democratic rule.

However, as observed my most citizens or members of a respective country, this right to vote is not mandatory. In fact, a lot of people take voting for granted. However, we have to understand that one of the most important obligations that a citizen has to exercise in a democratic regime is voting, because it gives the citizen of the country the privilege to choose their government. Moreover, the fact that the people are made to choose their leaders makes the citizen’s responsibility as well to choose wisely. This can only be done by being well informed. The people must be aware of the issues surrounding the candidates that they are about to choose from.

It is best that the people should be made to understand on how the votes can make a big difference. Understanding on the importance of voting can be made personal to motivate a more pro-active member of a country.

It is also best for the people to realize that elections cannot be about popularity anymore, as it might have been in our student days. It would have to be about the leaders who can represent the people’s best interest in the government. Sometimes, people always complain on how things are handled by those who are already in the position in the government. However, obviously few people do something about it. Year after year, voter turnouts usually go down. Voting is the first step to reform the ways of the government if you seem not to approve of how it is working.

Sometimes people think that with just a vote, it probably cannot count. Imagine if all the citizens have that kind of mentality then definitely electing a leader is close to impossible. It is best to understand that the candidate that would win on the election would have a very big impact on our future. The citizens of the country are given the privilege to vote for the candidates that they deemed worthy, and in return these winning candidates work for the people.

Whatever the reason for not voting for some, whether it be laziness or apathy, a lot of people take this right for granted.  When you find yourself doing so, why not ponder and ask yourself what it would probably feel like when you would not be able to have the choice to pick the person that you would want to lead the future of the country that you are in? How would it feel to have no word of choosing your job? Or even in deciding on how many children you would want to have?

People in countries who do not have a choice would definitely be happier to trade places with the citizens who have the power to vote for their leaders.
